Taiwan or Chinese Taipei? It is a Question.

Did CNN change its faction? In a CNN report yesterday, it named Taiwan as “Chinese Taipei”. What a big surprise! I cannot believe that this news is from CNN, a group made up of people who believe in Chinese threat theory. Is CNN beginning to flatter Chinese government for its great power in the economy recovery? And is the phrase “Chinese Taipei” its gift to express its friendship?

Actually, CNN just cited the phrase in an official document of NOAA. It is the first time that US official paper call Taiwan “Chinese Taipei”. It is just a piece of paper from NOAA to warn about tsunami following the Chile earthquake. However, I would say it’s a epoch making document. Several decades later, the file maybe framed in a museum or either in the office of the president of US or China.
Recently, Sino-US relation has been the focus of the world. In January 2009, Obama took office and his administration changed the former attitude of US, visiting China in his first year. Thanks to this successful visit, although there are ups and downs, Sino-US relations in 2009 made some good progress, which makes the Chinese people believe that Sino-US relations would have a better expectations than ever.
However, US broke the friendly atmosphere in the Sino-US relationship and at the same time broke the trade balance between China and United States. Beginning with its unilateral trade sanction against China, the United States adopted a series of measures to undermine trade atmosphere. Its improper actions against Chinese goods has enrage Chinese people. Obama is not only losing his supporters in the United States, but also destroying his “brand image” in China. What a pity! His popularity rating was once a surprising figure in Chinese mainland. What’s worse, as Obama and Hilary criticized on the “network freedom” in China, Chinese government is annoyed by such a clamorous “friend”.
Taiwan or Taipei? It is a question. If it is an American way to play up to Chinese government, why not just accept it as a joke?
