Obama: Is There a Surprise This Year?

One year has past since Obama’s inauguration. Compared to the poll in Match and April last year, now most of the assessments are negative. Obama is criticized for his unfulfilled promises and falling rating in opinion polls. In President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Jan. 27, 2010, he admitted the frustrations he has met in the past one year.

I think we should spare some time to review his successes and missteps. Although I have my own complaints about him, everyone deserve a  fair-minded appraisal, isn’t it?

May be we could begin with something that haven’t happen: the financial collapse and “the second great depression”. It might have been left behind, but it is Obama who took office when the financial crisis broke out, who sorted out  the messes for George Bush. He took radical measures to stave off the crisis. Disappointed supporters, disillusioned independents, angry opponents. All Americans have forgotten that if the president is John McCain or any other buddy, the economy environment will be the same or even worse. Obama did a bad job compared to other presidents in American history just because he doesn’t have the resources as rich as before. People with a cool head know the fact that, no matter what would be done, the economy would still be reeling one year later and that Obama is unfairly blamed.

The other responsibility facing the US president is the security problem. I am not agree about American invasion to other countries but Obama seemed to have done a good job in the affairs. He has sent more troop to Afghanistan, which pleased domestic militants.

As for education affairs, Obama has acted, within budget constraints, on his promises to make college more affordable, and he has taken small but promising steps to bring more accountability to the schooling of poor children. The progress has been buried by his unsuccessful foreign policies and small mistakes he made when visiting other countries’ heads.

Give much more time to our young president. He was elected as the first African American. He has been working hard to be another No.1. If we could forgive Clinton, why not be magnanimous with this hard-working president. The new year comes and other tough problems and choices are rushing at him. Too cool or too egotistical, too left-wing or not left-wing enough, observers and critics is making conclusion every day. As a voter however, let’s see if he could give us a surprise this year.
